Using A Mixed Martial Arts Approach To Fighting
At KMY Boston we take a mixed martial arts approach to fighting using a single system of fighting i.e., one that has already combined
standup striking from Boxing, Muay Thai, and other striking
styles, with techniques from grappling styles such as wrestling and Judo,
along with ground-fighting solutions from BJJ (Brazilian Ju-Jitsu) etc. All of these techniques and methods have
been combined so as to complement rather than contradict each other. This makes Krav Maga the original mixed martial art. Not bound by the rules of the Octagon, there are no illegal techniques
in the system, and “dirty fighting” e.g., eye-strikes, groin strikes, and gouging etc., all have their place. This doesn’t mean that they replace or are an alternative to technical punches
and strikes that require the development of certain technical skills to be effective e.g., a good jab requires the timing of weight movement, through footwork, and arm extension etc., in order
to effectively deliver power into the target. One of the goals of our training facility/gym is to turn untrained individuals into comprehensive fighters.
>
The comprehensive fighter is one who is able to operate at all ranges and distances of the fight and be able to move between them seamlessly e.g., you can move from striking range to grappling and back
out etc. You should also be able to combine the different dimensions of the fight to complement each other e.g., you should be able to punch/strike when wrestling and grappling whether that is when standing
up or on the ground; a good elbow strike when fighting on the ground can be as effective as a choke or strangulation in ending the fight. Rather than simply teach techniques and “moves” our gym focuses
on building effective fighting skills e.g., time is spent on developing good footwork, along with power and speed development etc. Skills win fights rather than techniques.
